Air India Flight 171 was an international passenger service, scheduled to fly from Ahmedabad Airport (AMD), India, to London Gatwick Airport (LGW), United Kingdom, via stopover in Mumbai (BOM). On 12 June 2025, at about 13:39 IST, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating this flight crashed just about 30 seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad, claiming the lives of 241 people, which consisted of 230 passengers and 11 of 12 crew members.

13:39 IST: An emergency was declared by the pilots when rotation was complete and reported as severe vibrations and loss of control.

Cause (Early Findings)
DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) and AAIB (Air Accident Investigation Bureau) of India had launched a complete inquiry. Initial indications suggest a catastrophic uncontained engine failure in the left engine during takeoff roll, which caused debris to severing hydraulic lines and flight control systems. A full investigation is on-going along with Rolls-Royce, Boeing and international aviation experts.
Reactions
Prime Minister of India declared a national day of mourning.
Air India grounded all Boeing 787s with similar engine configuration pending inspection.
A global review of engine inspection protocols for such aircraft was triggered by the incident.
